Smartstage truss is box shape, consists of four round tubes, outside diameter of 2″ with a wall of .125″. Truss must be welded to TUV standards using a #5356 rod, using TIG hand weld process. Welds must be x-rayed and bond the full depth of the weld. All edges must be deburred, air holes on all enclosed tubes, the truss is checked for twisting and deformation from heat. Finish size must be within 1% of the engineered size, welds must be consistent and clean. All truss connectors to have a mechanical connection, connector materials of 6061T6 alloy.
All weld operators must;
- Be certified
- Be using #5356 welding rod
- Work under the direction of a certified supervisor
- Have a copy of the weld drawing present during construction
- Follow assembly procedure
- Only weld parts in approved assembly jigs
- Be trained and certified under TUV regulation to understand all correct weld procedures
- Sign off on each truss welded (see QC document)

Welding Points on Diagonals:
Welds that travel all the way around the diagonal are not necessary up to certain types of applications such as heavy duty and extra heavy duty. Welds that do travel all the way around are usually found on truss that measures 18” wide or larger.
A breather hole conceiled inside the diagonal ends, is necessary in order to allow the inert gas to completely escape the filler tube. This actually creates a stronger, more precise weld for light/medium duty truss.
What is a Deflection?
Deflection is the maximum allowable amount of bowing or bending. It is usually measured in inches or millimeters. This determines just how much bending is ‘OK’ and how much is ‘NOT OK’.

A certificate of welding is available confirming such standards set forth by TÜV are carefully observed and maintained throughout the welding processes.
What type of welding process is used on the truss? Global truss is made using the TIG welding process. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas. It is also called GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). The arc is started with a tungsten electrode shielded by inert gas. A filler rod is fed into the weld puddle separately. This process is more time consuming than other types, but it produces a more precise weld, can be used at lower amperages for thinner metal and can be used on exotic metals.
What is Inert Gas?
Inert gas (a.k.a. noble gas) is any of a group of rare gases that include helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and sometimes radon and that exhibit great stability and extremely low reaction rates. They are used to shield the electric arc from outside contaminants and gases that may react with the weld.
What is UDL and CPL?
UDL stands for Uniformly Distributed Load. This describes how the weight or load is distributed on the truss and how the values found on the loading and deflection table are generated. CPL stands for Center Point Load. Again, describing the distribution of weight on the truss. Other types of loads are TPL (Third Point Load) and QPL (Quarter Point Load).
